The INNATE Testing Process

By Kevin Lamberg

The INNATE Response™ laboratory holds ISO 9001 certification which is a testimony to our commitment to our practitioners and their patients through our investment in advanced production and testing processes. Critically important to this entire process is designing a way to measure the nutrients in our products before and after production. Every bottle has to contain what we say it contains, the ingredients must adhere to a very strict purity standard and every dose that is listed on our label has to be scientifically verified to meet our claimed expiration date for the product.

orangesINNATE Response produces 30 million whole food vitamin tablets per year, and adding capsule and powder production to this demand requires a verification system that is highly efficient without compromising accuracy. Our laboratory meets this qualification because it uses specialized tests for each ingredient that is used in each product. This specialization is evidenced at the facility through our capacity to test at four different levels of the matterial depending on the need. These four levels include the macroscopic, the molecular, the atomic and subatomic levels (electron). Combining qualitative identification with quantitative verification virtually eliminates identification error.

At the macroscopic, or the botanical level, an identification test is used to match plants against a known standard to verify their authenticity. Going a step further, an advanced form of thin layer chromatography called HPTLC, or High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography is used. HPTLC is a qualitative test. This test is designed to identify the known “bands” of a botanical and is a pass/fail test that is like identifying a fingerprint. It is a test that is relatively simple to run, is reproducible and highly reliable for determining the accurate identity of a substance. Furthermore, the quality of a substance can bSpinache ascertained using this method of analysis by observing the intensity of the color bands the substance emits when tested.

The HPLC (High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography) machine is the instrument we use to analyze vitamins. Each vitamin is extracted differently depending on its stability, solubility, pH, etc. In order to produce the most accurate analysis, the vitamin molecules are separated out and then grouped together inside a column inside the instrument. The column is packed with silica beads with long carbon chains which groups the molecules (vitamins) together based off of their size and polarity. Lastly, the molecules will pass through a detector which detects the absorption of that molecule at a specific wavelength of light.

We perform our mineral analysis using ICP-OES (Inductively Couple Plasma Optical Emissions Spectroscopy). This instrument is based on argon plasma which analyzes mineral potency in relation to the light that they emit. Each mineral emits a wavelength of light which acts as its identifiable characteristic. Once the mineral atoms are introduced into the plasma (which is about as hot as the surface of the sun; approx.10,000 degrees Celsius), they emit photons of light at a specific wavelength. The instrument is designed to detect the intensity of thBeetse light and output the concentration of that mineral in our sample.

Finally, the LCMS (Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometer) can analyze materials down to the electron level. We currently only use this instrument to analyze very small vitamin molecules such as Biotin. The detection of Biotin is much more sensitive on the LCMS than the HPLC (High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography) since the instrument can “see” down to the electron level.
